Boca Library has new initiative for 2018

The Boca Raton Public Library’s signature initiative for 2018 is Discover You @ BRPL – Resources for Better Living.

This initiative aims to connect the community with all the resources available in the library to help them discover their potential. Whether it’s learning a new language, learning to code, learning how to manage finances, or finding a new favorite author, a variety of classes, programs, and materials to support learning and discovery for all stages of life will be offered.

Adults will enjoy author talks; Health & Wellness Week; storytellers highlighting true stories from personal experiences; Money Smart Week; book talks; and coding and website design classes.

Children will experience coding programs, health and nutrition classes, a life skills course, and babysitter training. People of all ages will participate in our Summer Reading program with this year’s national theme of Libraries Rock.  All programs are free and participants can register online or at either library.

Firefighters to receive pay increase

Terms for a new collective bargaining agreement between the International Association of Firefighters and the city of Boca Raton have been approved.

The three year contract expires Sept. 30, 2020.

Personnel will receive a 3.5 percent per year pay increase that will be backdated to Oct. 1 of 2017. That rate will continue on Oct. 1 of this year and of 2019.

Eligible members will continue to receive performance evaluations with step increases of 4.82 percent annually, according to the deal.

The cost of the contract for this current fiscal year will cost the city an extra $625,000.

Councilman Jeremy Rodgers cast the sole dissenting vote against the contract.
