The award-winning Boca Raton Community High School Drama Department presents the multi-TONY Award winning musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone on February 26-March 1.
Be transported to the magical and wonderful world of the Jazz Age!
The Man in Chair, a Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his “non-specific sadness”, listens to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy, “The Drowsy Chaperone”. As he listens to this rare recording, he is transported into the musical. The characters appear in his small apartment and it is transformed into an impressive Broadway set with sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes. The plot of the show-within-a-show centers on Janet Van De Graaff, a showgirl who plans to give up her career in order to marry oil tycoon, Robert Martin. However, Janet is the star of “Feldzieg’s Follies”, and a lot of money is riding on her name to sell the show. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight!
Hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical”, The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful mega-musical, poking fun at all that characterizes the Jazz Age genre featuring the award winning “Best Original Score” including songs As We Stumble Along, Fancy Dress, Show Off, and I Do I Do in the Sky, delivering one show stopping song and dance number after another.
