JFS Receives $2.3 Million Donation

Staff report

Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) recently received its largest, single gift: $2.3 million.

The donation came from Bernard Sherman and the funds created the “Bernard Sherman Program to Enhance Jewish Identity.”

The money was put into an endowment, which will provide vital support for the many programs and services of the agency which serve people of all ages and beliefs.

The Bernard Sherman Program will enable children of families who reside within the Boca Raton and Delray Beach areas and who financially qualify, with the assistance needed to participate in Jewish life cycle events such as Hebrew school, Jewish youth group trips and conventions, participation in the Maccabi Games, advocacy conferences, Israel experiences including High School in Israel, Gap Year Programs and the March of the Living.

The mission of the Program, which falls under JFS’ Center for Families & Children, is to make Jewish life more accessible for all people including those with special needs.

“It was important for me to have Bernie’s memory honored in a way that has meaning for future generations,” said his widow Muriel Sherman. “With the creation of the ‘Bernard Sherman Program to Enhance Jewish Identity’ we can help ensure the continuity of the Jewish people. Bernie would have been proud to do that.”

A Michigan-native, Bernard Sherman was a very creative and forward thinking businessman operating several parallel businesses including storage, auto repair, auto salvage and insurance businesses. He devoted the last 23 years of his life to Muriel and they enjoyed traveling and spending time together. In addition to his wife, Muriel, Bernard is survived by two adult children, Arlyn and Bruce.

“We will be forever grateful to Bernard Sherman for his generosity and philanthropy to JFS,” JFS President and CEO, Danielle Hartman, said. “His gift will help children and young adults who would not otherwise be able to have these experiences while at the same time helping fill the shortfalls in funding for our existing programs and services.”
