Most of the ailments endocrinologist Dr. Sonia Gibson sees at her Boca Raton office are unrelated to the COVID-19 virus.

“Diabetology is my primary specialty so I’m helping my diabetic patients with ways to cope with eating habits and medication compliance during isolation protocols,” said Dr. Gibson.

“I’m also guiding patients on their exercise routines and in achieving healthier lifestyles. Another focus of mine is in providing patients with some psychological support during these difficult times.”

Open and safe protocols are in place at Dr. Gibson’s Tenet Florida Physician Services (TFPS) office in Boca Raton and at West Boca Medical Center where Dr. Gibson is on-staff.

“There are still emergency situations that might arise during a pandemic that are unrelated to COVID-19 but may be equal in severity, or even worse, so people should not withhold medical attention. Our hospital and clinic has created emergency protocols and maintains a focus on infection prevention as well as in isolating the sick according to their conditions,” said Dr. Gibson.

Dr. Gibson’s office maintains multiple care measures to maintain the safety of both patients and staff including screening questionnaires, temperature checks, social distancing protocols, face covering mandates and disinfecting procedures among other protocols. Dr. Gibson also offers telehealth appointments.

“We have been offering telemedicine and are encouraging patients that do not need a live encounter to switch their appointment to telemedicine. Luckily, endocrinology is a specialty where telemedicine is very easy and we can still offer a full and thorough evaluation virtually. We understand some visits need to be done face to face, and those patients are advised to see us in the office with our safety protocols in place,” said Dr. Gibson.

Dr. Gibson is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) with an additional subspecialty certification by ABIM in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. She specializes in general endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, thyroid disorders and in-office thyroid biopsy, osteoporosis and bone disorders. Dr. Gibson has been practicing medicine since 2008. For her education and training, Dr. Gibson completed a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism as well as residency and internship programs at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center located in Detroit, MI. Dr. Gibson graduated medical school from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, located in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Additionally, Dr. Gibson is bilingual in English and Spanish.
